Why Michelle Obama Grew Her Bangs Out
Last January, Michelle Obama made headlines around the world when she wore a new hairstyle with bangs for the 2013 inaugural celebration. The celebration included a parade, the oath of office, and the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball where the President and First Lady danced to Jennifer Hudson singing Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.”
While there was much talk about which of two dresses Michelle Obama would wear, it seemed most of the coverage tended to center around her new hairdo. The First Lady’s new wispy bangs were a real hit with the media and the American people. Even the President mentioned her bangs and said he liked them.
At the time, Mrs. Obama attributed her new doo to a mid-life makeover. At 49, she was ready for a change. She joked that they wouldn’t let her get a sports car or bungee jump so she settled for cutting her hair. At the time, she not only decided to try a new haircut, she also revealed it in a new way. Her own Twitter account.
That was then, and this is now. The bangs are gone in favor of a side-swept hairstyle. In an interview with Parade magazine, she was asked about the change and she admitted that it’s hard to give a speech with “hair in your face.”
I did like her in bangs, but really, her hair looks great either way. I’m happy to see she doesn’t allow popular public opinion dictate what hairstyle she is wearing.
While the First Lady exudes style, I’m sure she’d rather talk about more important topics. In fact, that’s exactly what she does in her Parade interview. She talks about parenting, and about the fact that the country is ready for its first female president…but that is not her.
