Colored denim is everywhereâ€â€especially those cute little cropped pants. But what to wear with them?
Neutralize them: This is especially important with some of the brighter shades of denim. Wear a flowing black, white, or gray top to balance out the color on the bottom. The tighter the pants, the looser the top should be (within reason), again for balance.
If you don’t like the solid look, you could take a shirt that has a neutral pattern, like black and white stripes, to keep things interesting. Slip into a pair of sandals and you’re done.
If you’re playing it safe with a neutral top, but you really want to add some pizzazz to the ensemble, try jewelry in a complementary shade. Purple pants? Look for a green bangle or necklace to dress it up without going over the top.
Wear your blue jeans on top: Well, you like to pair bright tops with your blue jeans, right? Why not flip it upside down? There are plenty of denim shirt styles out there right now since that’s another hot trend. Pick one up and turn your normal outfit on its head. With this look, a pair of understated neutral flats really pull the look together, giving you a laidback, comfortable vibe.
Color-blocking: Bright pink pants are unexpected. A simple black or white t-shirt is kind of a given with them, though. Why not shake it up with some color-blocking? Pair a royal blue shirt with the pink pants. Or a yellow top with red pants.
With this kind of combination, you’ll need to be careful with your accessories. Tie in some of the bottom color on top with a headband, statement necklace, earrings, a colorful lightweight summer scarf, etc.
Feel free to add a stabilizing neutral with your shoes, or just go ahead and rock some more color there. If you’re still feeling a little uncomfortable in all that color but you really want to make it work, you can take it back down a notch by throwing on a neutral-toned blazer to streamline the combination.
