It’s been about seven years since we saw Tom Cruise sweep Katie Holmes off her feet in fairy tale fashion and it seems that the fairy tale is ending. And while it is always sad to see these things end, it doesn’t come to me as a big shock considering how many odd things that have come up in recent years with Tom.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s still a heartthrob in many respects. I can still picture him sliding across the floor in his white tube socks and t-shirt in Risky Business and he really did make me swoon in Cocktail. I am pretty sure I’m taller than him, but before he got a bit weird, I would have been willing to wear flats to date him.

But in recent years, my affections for Tom Cruise wore thin… I was less enchanted by his smooth persona in the movies and found myself watching awestruck by his passionate professions of disdain for medication to help women with Post Partum Depression when speaking with Matt Lauer.  I began to realize that Scientology was a big driving force in his life and being that it seems to be a faith that breeds quite a bit of judgment and comes with some just plain odd belief systems – I grew leery of my crush. I am a big proponent of everyone having the right to believe as they see fit, but when that belief system comes with harsh judgements on something that you know very little about personally, I have a problem with that.

I would imagine that Katie started to become less enchanted as she realized similar things about her prince charming. If you’ve been married for any length of time, you know that it takes at least 5 years to truly know your partner – so I’m guessing, she just realized he really wasn’t as charming and fantastic as he portrayed himself.

It’s not to say he’s a bad person – it’s more likely that his core beliefs began to conflict greatly with hers. With Scientology being notorious for being outlandish in its belief systems, I could see that wearing on a person who didn’t feel a deep connection to that faith over time.

The question now remains, what will happen with their little Suri? When Tom Cruise divorced Nicole Kidman, the kids remained with him and with the church of Scientology. Will that happen with Suri? With Katie Holmes demanding sole custody, I’m guessing there will be a lengthy custody battle.

Apparently, Tom was blindsided by this divorce filing, so I’m guessing this may be a bitter fight between the two as well. What’s always sad in situations like that however, is the children suffer. Hopefully, they will keep it civil. Time will tell.

What do you think about the divorce – do you think Scientology killed their marriage or was it an age gap or something completely unrelated?
