The New Vegas Seeks to Be Family-Friendly
There are hundreds of words used to describe Las Vegas, but family-friendly isn’t generally one of them. Sin City has long been known as an adult theme park where anything goes.
Gambling, shows featuring scantily clad women, and legal prostitution are as common there as hawkers at state fairs.
Over the years, the city has attempted to woo families with things like child care in the casinos, but the attempts didn’t overshadow the sooty reputation.
Now planners are trying once again to make Las Vegas a family vacation destination. New projects include two Ferris wheels on the strip where families can observe the glitz from far above.
Resorts World Las Vegas Hotel and Casino have plans for a water park, and a Wet ‘n’ Wild water park is in the works as well. They hope that it will attract more international tourism, as well as international money.
I have been through Las Vegas but it has never been the type of place to pique my interest. I prefer history, art, beaches, hiking trails, shoe stores…
The idea of it becoming a family destination vacation spot sort of makes me laugh. Sure, they are going to have those great water parks, but I wonder what sort of bathing suits you are going to find there.
Personally, I don’t really want my kids at a water park where women are wearing thong bikinis and men are wearing the equivalent. When I think of family vacation spot, I think of Orlando, or Hershey, or Galveston.
I may be wrong. I guess I’ll find out – one of my sons is soon going to be stationed there, and after six years of him being in Asia with only two visits home, I am looking forward to being able to see him a lot more often, scantily clad showgirls or not.
Do you think Las Vegas can really market itself as a family friendly spot?
