The Move of a Lifetime
Would you move to Mars?
So far over 78,000 applicants from all over the world say yes. A company called Mars One is calling all would be space explorers to take a one way trip to the red planet and set up a colony. They say that because of the changes that would happen to the human body over time, there is no way that anyone could come back to Earth and survive.
The trip will take eight months during which time you will not be able to shower. Worse than that, no one else will be able to shower either. Once you get there, your days will be filled with constructing the colony, taking samples, doing research, and growing your own food.
You will be in close quarters with everyone else, so introverts need not apply. Another task will be to let the people back on earth know how you like it, what it feels like, and other bits of trivia.
Doesn’t this sound like the ultimate reality show?
I couldn’t do it — I have way too many questions. For example, what happens if the food refuses to grow on Mars? What is the backup plan if the thingie that makes breathable air malfunctions? How will the toilets be handled and what will happen to the waste? Most important of all, where in the heck will I get my necessary supplies like feminine products, chocolate, and mascara?
Obviously this is not a trip for me but hey — I have a couple of people I’d like to volunteer. Do they have to be conscious when they come on board?
Would you ever consider something like this?
