I’ve had combination skin for most of my life. Â As a younger woman, I tended to avoid putting too much heavy makeup on my face. I never used to wear foundation – only a pressed powder – because I thought that the more stuff I spackled onto myself, the more likely my skin would get oily and I would end up with a breakout.
It’s only been in the last 5 to 10 years that I’ve come over to the dark side of using foundations. The older you get, the more you have to hide, I guess! But any makeup artist worth her salt, will tell you not to use foundation without using a primer.
I used to roll my eyes at the thought of primer: another product on my face? This could only lead to certain disaster! And it’s more expensive to buy an additional product!
Au contraire, the makeup artist would say, you will use less foundation, it will go on more smoothly, and the right primer can actually help balance the oil on your skin.
I now agree. They’re called primers for a reason. They really do help to put your face in prime condition.
