What is Spotify? In a word, ALLCAPSAWESOME! More specifically, Spotify is a Swedish DRM (Digital Rights Management) -based music streaming service. It was founded by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon and offers music of select artists with a wide variety of genres, as well as major and indie labels. More importantly, it’s legal!
It’s been around since 2008, but I knew nothing about it until 2011 when I received a subscription as one of my Klout perks. I am so happy I did. I use Spotify daily.
Why are you still sitting here reading this? You should be signing up for your own Spotify account.
You can browse music by artist, album, record label, genre or playlist. It is also a social media-sharing tool. You can log on with your Facebook account and share your music with your FB friends, as well as, have access to their music. It’s the unlimited mix tape of 2012.
I absolutely love it because I have a wide range of taste and this allows me to seamlessly go between Chingon, The Wicked Soundtrack, Dave Matthews Band and Niki Minaj and then back to the Rolling Stones and anything else my musical heart desires.
It offers 2 types of subscriptions; one free and one paid. The difference is, paid subscriptions have no ads, higher bitrate streams and offline access to music (no Internet service needed to access all of your favorite tunes). With a paid premium subscription, users can also use Spotify on their mobile devices. The service currently has about 10 million users.
