Simon Cowell Stood for Inspirational 13-year-old X-Factor Contestant
Those of you who watched American Idol back in the day know that Simon Cowell is not known for offering much encouragement. Though he has softened his approach a little more in recent years as an X Factor judge, he is still quite direct and even downright blunt at times.
However, there are times when he actually lets the less talented down with gentle words.
This past week, a young 13-year-old girl, Rion Paige, took the stage. She was cute as a button with long blond curls and wearing a black strapless dress.
When she reached to straighten the microphone it was evident something wasn’t quite “normal” with her hands. She has a condition called arthrogryposis multiplex congenita which causes the joints in her hands to curve. When Simon asked her to tell something about herself, she shared that she is nearly blind in her right eye and quickly explained her condition with an upbeat attitude.
That in itself was inspirational, but when she sang, it gave me goosebumps.
Rion Paige doesn’t want people feeling sorry for her, and after her performance I don’t think anyone will. She is such an example of not letting challenges and difficulties set you back. Her voice is incredible. One at a time, the judges stood and applauded—last but least Simon Cowell!
That’s not something you see very often, but she was that good. He went on to say, “I think you’re literally extraordinary. I really do. I remember the first day I met Carrie Underwood and I remember predicting this girl was going to go on and do special things with her life and I’m going to say the same about you, Rion. I’m going to remember this audition for a long, long time.”
