Adding a dog to your family is almost like adding a baby. I should know; we are getting a puppy next month and I have been busy researching dog name sites (yes, they do exist) and pet products. There’s discount stores where you can get a deal on both things and then there are canine boutiques that offer a nice alternative and unique items but definitely cost a lot more.

Here is a list of some basic essentials you’ll need right away and other cool items I have discovered while perusing the Internet.

The Basics – supplies you’ll need as soon as you bring your puppy home

  • Water Bowl
  • Food Bowl
  • Leash
  • Collar
  • Dog Food
  • Local Veterinarian – new pets should be seen right away. Vet will advise on recommended shots and on some type of flea, tick and parasite control.
  • Shelter – if outside dog or if dog will spend any length of time outdoors

Optional Items – depending on the type of dog, budget and living conditions

  • Dog Bed
  • Dog Toys and Chewys – highly recommended for puppies if you care about your shoes
  • Dog Crate – if you are planning to crate train
  • Treats
  • Dog Brush and/or Comb
  • Dog Shampoo
  • Puppy Pads to help eliminate indoor “accidents”
  • Dog Carrier – for puppies and small dogs
  • Dog Clippers/Strippers – depending on coat type

Now for the cool stuff, and wouldn’t you know it, there isn’t much you can’t find for your furry companion; from clothing items to blinged out collars, they make EVERYTHING for pooches.

In 2011, according to the APPA, Americans spent $50.96 million on pet products (food, supplies, OTC medicines, grooming and boarding). That’s a lot of Scooby snacks, friends.

Lights-Up Leash, $25.00; thepupcrawl.com

When your dog’s gotta go, he’s gotta go, whether it’s after dark or not. This glowing leash keeps you and your pup visible from one quarter mile away in the dark, and each purchase helps benefit shelter animals.

Canine Cuisine Bowl, $15.00-28.00; dogsuncorked.com

Inspired by the wine country lifestyle, Dogs Uncorked celebrates the canines that live lavishly amongst the vines and their wine loving owners.

Available in three sizes these bowls are guaranteed lead-free, and are dishwasher and microwave safe and oh, so chic.

Dog is Good Dogism Treat Canister, $30.00; poshpuppyboutique.com

For all the great tricks your pooch performs, he’s going to deserve a tasty treat. What better place to store them than in this ceramic canister covered in graffiti-like, all-over print that includes adorable dog sayings such as: “dog is loyal, dog is cuddles, dog is joy, dog is fetching” and more.

Fantasy Furniture Cleopatra Chaise Zebra Stripe, $89.99; petco.com

Allow your favorite furry friend to lounge in the lap of luxury while you add to the decor of your home with this ultra soft chaise bed. Includes matching pillow!

Remember, at the end of the day, for a dog to be happy, it does not need a lot of fancy equipment and supplies. Just your TLC is enough.

Please share your favorite pet supply.
