I’ll admit to you that I am not a very fashion-forward kind of woman . . . I’m more of a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl. But for some reason, I’m always drawn to fashion: the magazines, Project Runway, and of course New York’s Fashion Week which is taking place September 8- 15, 2011.

Maybe part of the reason I’m not into being fashionable myself is because 90% of the time, I’m at home with the kids . . . no reason to go out and spend a fortune on a glamorous wardrobe that I might be lucky enough to wear out of the house on a date night once or twice a month.

You don’t have to walk down a cat walk to be stylish. Here are some simple tips that can help any mom achieve “comfortable” while also being stylish.

Accessorize

By simply adding some key accessories, you can instantly create a stylish look. You don’t need to wear the latest trends if you have some amazing accessories. Even if you wear a tank top and jeans or capris, find a “statement piece”: a colorful or bold necklace, or an interesting bracelet.

Copy Designer Looks

When all else fails, check out your fave stars, magazines, or online sites for fashion ideas. Let designers and other people who “get” fashion inspire your wardrobe. Sure you may not be able to afford a $300 designer blouse, but you can take the look and look for similar styles in your price range.

Makeup

Pick one feature and focus in on it. For example, I have big, green eyes and so I choose to always play up my eyes and a little extra time on them. Eye shadow can take your casual jeans and t-shire and draw attention to your face and that cute pony tail you put in your hair. Maybe you have great lips — wear a bold lipstick while just putting a coat of mascara on your eyes. If you watch the runways, you see this trend a lot . . . don’t be afraid to try it yourself!

Pull Your Hair Back

Sounds easy, right? A polished pony tail can be just as stylish as a high-maintenance look. Take the time to put a little shine in your hair, comb back towards the crown of your head, and use a stylish hair band to create a simple pony tail. Add a fun headband and you’re ready to go!

Shoes

Even if you have on a casual skirt and shirt, wear cool shoes! It’s an easy way to mix up your outfits or change a casual look completely. You can find great deals on the “in” shoes at places like Payless Shoe Source.

What creative ways do you use to look stylish and fashionable?

I appreciate all help I can get, because although i feel great when i’m dressed great, I hardly know how to do it. I have found, however, that having lots of stuff to play around with, not specifically expensive, can go a long way. Though now I have a hard time affording even cheap stuff in abundance. The styles change rather quickly.

I love fashion, and love to shop, but can’t always afford to get what I really want. So I have to make myself happy with some basics, but I try to mix up my accessories and wear heels more often — that helps me feel more polished even if my clothes aren’t designer labels.

I NEED that orange top! I am all about the basics and what I can mix and match. I do like to buy a few more expensive quality pieces that I know will last after a lot of wear and washing and then all the trendier things I tend to buy at Target or somewhere cheaper!

Love these ideas. My hair is always in a ponytail I am definitely going to try to dress it up next time. :)

You are SO RIGHT on the accessories or shoes making an impact. I struggle but have started doing more necklaces (which the baby grabs…good teaching moment for “gennnnntle” right?) and my fave is a pair of peep toe leopard flats I found at a thrift store for $2.50. I feel super sassy in those. AND red lipstick. Always some lipstick. I wear more makeup now as I need more…ahem….help. LOL Keep the advice coming, so checking out the sit e you mentioned.
