Modern Clocks

Crazy clocks were a big part of my childhood.

My mom had a bird clock that would whistle different bird calls at different times of day. One slightly off-kilter aunt had several Kit Kat Klocks with the sequined bodies and creepy eyes that would roll back and forth.

My godmother, who I often visited for weeks at a time during summer, had all sorts of clocks in her house. She had a large grandfather clock in the living room and in the dining room was a very traditional cuckoo clock.

When I was a young girl, I’d love waiting for a new hour to start so I could watch the little birdie come out and chirp away. As I got older, I started to hate that clock, because I slept in the room next to the dining room and its chirp would wake me up every hour of every night.

I don’t think cuckoo clocks are very popular anymore…but the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art store is taking a modern twist on the classic cuckoo, as well as offering some other really cool modern clocks.

The cuckoo version is the Arcoiris Cuckoo Clock.

And guess what? I kind of like this clock!

It’s designed by Raffaele Darra and measures about 14 inches by 11 inches – big enough to make a bold statement in a room, but not overpowering.

Made of wood, the stripes are made of hand-finished lacquered resin.

Here’s what I think is really cool: the little birdie that pops out? He’s on a light sensor. That means he doesn’t pop out when it’s dark to chirp and annoy you to high heaven. The clock is $350, so it darn well better have a light sensor.

SF Moma also has the Cubic Wall Clock. This is neat, because you can arrange the twelve cubes in any pattern you want, making the end product uniquely yours. The cubes can be hung, or stuck on the wall with self-adhesive. This clock is $70.00

This Nelson Sunburst wall clock offers a splash of modern, colorful design to any room. It measures 18.5″ in diameter and is $385. Yikes!

If you want to boast that you have one of the thinnest clocks in the world, snap up this Ultra Flat Wall Clock, designed by Thomas Buchheim. This brightly colored clock measures about 14″ in diameter and features whisper quiet stepping movement. This clock is $40.

Which one of these is your favorite?

Maybe it’s just my age, but I need numbers on my clock!! I like to actually use them to tell the time, and if I was just going to estimate it, I wouldn’t spend $400 on one.

That said, I like the starburst design best. The Ultra Flat one is cute too, but it makes me think I should be playing Trivial Pursuit. (pie slices)

My kitchen clock was a bridal shower gift. It’s beyond plain, but it takes one dinky battery that seems to last for decades and when all the other electronic clocks on devices go out because of a power surge, I can rely on this one clock to keep chugging along, like the little engine that could.
