Okay, so maybe chocolate isn’t as much of the go-to Valentine’s Day gift it used to be. It’s been replaced by gadgetry. I’d definitely prefer an iPad over a box of chocolate.

But if someone’s going to give me chocolate, I won’t say no. I just hope it’s something other than a Whitman’s Sampler, you know?

There are plenty of unusual and gourmet chocolate gift ideas out there. And with the day of love just days away, I thought I’d spotlight a few cool ones I found. If one catches your fancy, print it out and stick it in your loved one’s briefcase. Or email this post to them. Or heck, just go order it yourself. You deserve it!

Xocoatl Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans

Xocoatl uses Venezuelan “El Rey” chocolate in their chocolate blends, which is known for its organic farming, fair trade practices and high quality. Venezuelan criollo cacao beans are only used in 10% of the world’s chocolate, making these espresso beans, covered in yummy dark chocolate goodness, a rare treat. After being dipped in a thick coat of chocolate, the beans are dusted with a little cocoa powder for an extra chocolate punch.

Richart Sweetheart Rouge Passion Bouche

Why buy a heart-shaped box of chocolates when the chocolate can BE a heart? This gourmet sweetheart from Richart has a dark chocolate shell beautifully designed with red and pink swirls on the outside. The inside has a filling full of hints of passion fruit, red berries and chocolate.

Moonstruck Chocolate Truffle Cupcake Collection

Moonstruck Chocolate has a beautiful, unusual and whimsical chocolate collection. This particular set combines delicious chocolate with a cupcake design – a perfect gift for women, because who doesn’t love cupcakes? Each cupcake-shaped truffle has a different flavor – Peanut Butter, Strawberry Cheesecake, Sour Cream Fudge and German Chocolate Cake.

Recchiuti Chocolate Covered Key Lime Pears

For a chocolate gift truly off the beaten path try these pear crisps from Recchiuti. They are thin slices of crisped fruit, swathed in dark chocolate and infused with the flavor of key lime juice. Tart, sweet, and yes, I’m calling it slightly healthy due to the fruit!

Vosges Bacon and Eggs Chocolate

Don’t knock it until you try it. For the woman who thinks it’s perfectly acceptable to have chocolate for breakfast (and it is!), this unusual confection from Vosges will fit the bill. Egg-shaped chocolates expertly imprinted with an adorable rooster are filled with bacon caramel. I can’t imagine anything better than this combination of sweet and savory!
