Summertime is a great time to catch up on your reading and inspire your kids to read. Like me, you probably don’t have a lot of free time to read during the school year, what with all the time spent shuttling kids, doing homework with the kids and trying your damndest just to keep up with all that laundry.
Summertime is another story. Hopefully, there is a lot more down time in your day. Time spent lounging by the pool, relaxing at the park for a midday picnic, or just sitting indoors in the central air trying to keep cool while the kids nap; this is the time that you can spend reading and not running errands or playing taxi driver.
I’ve come across a few books that I think would be great reads for this summer. Some you know, others maybe not, but you should definitely check them out.
Confessions of a Scary Mommy by Jill Smokler, the ultimate scary mommy, is a great, easy and fun read for this summer.
Confessions of a Scary Mommy is a New York Times bestselling collection of original essays that take an irreverent look at the underbelly of parenting- things most moms would never admit, but feel every day.
It’s hilariously funny because it is so true. Once you pick it up, you won’t be able to put it down until you are finished and then you will be begging Jill to write another.
Brand New Human Being by Emily Jeanne Miller. A story about a stay-at-home dad, Logan Pyle, who is trying to save his marriage, find self-fulfillment and figure out why his five-year-old has regressed to a baby all while trying to figure out this parenthood thing. This is at the top of my list because I can’t wait to hear the viewpoint of a stay-at-home dad, Mr. Pyle, on the situations that are usually restricted to stay-at-home moms.
Let’s Pretend this Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) by the incredible Jenny Lawson, the Bloggess if you are nasty.
Let’s Pretend this Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) is a poignantly disturbing, yet darkly hysterical tome for every intellectual misfit who thought they were the only ones to think the things that Lawson dares to say out loud. Like laughing at a funeral, this book is both irreverent and impossible to hold back once you get started.
The Fifty Shades series by E.L. James: Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. Yes, the entire series. I won’t lie, it is mindless reading and it will probably rot your brain a little bit but it will have your private parts all tingly and you’ll be a little happier to see your husband, and that’s a good thing. Even if the writing itself is sub par, the storyline will get your motor running.
Seating Arrangements by Maggie Shipstead. This book is told from the perspective of the father of a knocked up bride. Endless drama unfolds and you never know what’s going to happen next. It’s the perfect summer novel to keep you interested yet easy enough to not give you a headache in the warm summer sun.
What will you be reading under your straw hat at the beach this summer?
