Avoiding “Mom Style”

One of the hardest transitions most women face is figuring out how to dress fashionably after they become moms. Even if you lose all of the weight you gained in pregnancy, your body is no longer the same shape that it was before.

Go to any mall or grocery store and it won’t take very long to categorize the women who have succumbed to the dreaded “mom style”. High waisted jeans and pants, baggy t-shirts, polo shirts, sweat pants, and sensible shoes – the antithesis of the trendy young woman that once existed in that very same body. Don’t let it happen to you.

One of the biggest mistakes is shopping in the junior department. Even if the clothes fit, a 36 year old mom does not look cool in her 13 year old daughter’s styles. She just looks old.

Take a little time every day to put on some make-up and brush your hair. Add a spritz of your favorite perfume to remind yourself of your femininity.

Jeans are great wardrobe basics. Choose darker denim, especially if you are carrying a few extra pounds. Shy away from tattered jeans and other teen trendy styles. Choose boot cut jeans in a little longer length. Low rise and high rise jeans will both look frumpy, but for different reasons. A midrise will keep you looking put together.

Layer your tops. Wear a tank top with a longer, lightweight shirt opened like a jacket. Wear fabrics that move gracefully rather than baggy cotton tees.

Keep up with the fashionable colors for the season. You don’t have to re-do your wardrobe but add a few accessories in that color.

Finally, the little black dress is just as important to you now as it has ever been. Choose a simple, fitted style and dress it up with accessories and some amazing shoes.

Sassy shoes and some jewelry also brings a boring jeans & tshirt outfit out of the mom zone. I’m much more aware of keeping myself looking like myself now that I’m a full time SAHM – when I was working outside the home, it was easy to not “look like a mom” because I had to dress up (even if I sometimes had some spit up on my shoulder – true story!)
