Are Bugs Palatable?

With the sun coming up earlier every day and the weather here in Texas breaking into brilliant warmth every afternoon, my mind is on Spring.

My husband’s already started growing some herbs inside and getting the yard ready for the warmer weather.

There’s one thing I seriously dread about Spring though.

And that’s bugs. I’m a serious bug-o-phobe, and Texas is not the best place to live for a bug-o-phobe, because yes, the bugs are indeed bigger in Texas (like everything else). I still have nightmares about some of the critters we’ve found on our back porch.

But bugs can be cute, too….right?

Somebody convince me of this!

Apparently, bugs are becoming trendy -at least as an essential part of a beautiful tablescape. It sounds odd, but it’s true. Bugs are making their way onto all sorts of home design products.

One collection that I found to share with you is from Bailey Doesn’t Bark. This is a beautiful site with tons of tableware, home accents and more. Their stuff is minimalist and lovely.

And Bailey Doesn’t Bark is not afraid of putting bugs all over their stuff – even their plates. <taking a deep breath>

Let’s have a look at a few of their collections.

This first one is…Ants.

These porcelain plates are designed to look like a bunch of ants scattered about. Pair it with a matching cup and it looks like there’s a major ant party going on.

I’m laughing at the whimsy of this, and yet my skin is crawling at the same time.  Creepy crawly alert!

But Bailey Doesn’t Bark doesn’t stop at ants. They have a collection for arachnid lovers too…the Blue Bugs line.

Spiders are some of my least favorite critters…but I kinda like this pattern. The maker writes on the Bailey website about how we was trying to harken back to the traditional English tea time but wanted something with more humor. I think he accomplished both.

You can place the spider mug on its own spider webbed plate, too.

The web design is very delicate, almost fragile looking – just like a real web.

This tableware is seriously delightful, even for a bug-o-phobe like me. The right food, presented in and on these items, would look charming.

Tell me what you think – would you be weirded out by serving food on dishes covered with ants or spiders? I’m still feeling itchy from looking at those ants!

First, lucky you for having warm weather already! I am still waiting for the rest of the snow to melt, and I don’t doubt we’ll get some more before winter is through. So yeah, bring on the spring!

Second, bugs and food don’t mix for me! While the dishes and cups might be “cute” the idea would turn sour quickly the moment you are using them and being bothered by a stray fly or pesky wasp. Eww. Ants? No thanks.

I live in New Orleans, so I can totally sympathize with the huge bugs! Most don’t bother me, but the cockroaches and stinging caterpillars we get in the spring do!

I’m not a big fan of the spider print above but I actually really like the way the ant print looks on the plates and bowls!
