I love handmade jewelry and this autumn is the perfect time to show off your penchant for the unique. Boho style still remains strong this fall and artisan accessories are a necessary addition to those romantic, billowy poet shirts and wispy gypsy skirts.
Artisan jewelry has come a long way since the 1960s when my mom bought a ring made of twisted, colored telephone wire from a couple with long tangled hair and identical bell bottom jeans and tee shirts. I still have that ring, by the way.
Today’s handcrafted necklaces and other items are created from a bigger variety of materials than ever before. Gold, copper, and silver wire are combined with colorful beads, shells, and other items to create one of a kind accessories that make your style uniquely your own.
Just like with any other jewelry, you will want to keep your pieces in proportion to your build, your outfit, and the look you are going for. Although handcrafted accessories can be very elegant, they tend to work best with a casual outfit.
Handcrafted jewelry is generally more affordable than what you would normally find at a jewelry store or other commercial outlet. Not only will you be getting something unique, but you will be helping to support a family rather than a corporation – and that always feels good! I would rather support small businesses that aren’t outsourcing or trying to figure out how to make it cheaper without me knowing it, you know?
One of my favorite site for handmade anything is Etsy. One of my favorite go to spots for jewelry is a little store called Oak Tree Jewelers. The tagline reads, “…where integrity and craftsmanship take root.â€
Sounds good to me.
