Nowadays, not only do parents have smart phones but their kids do, too! Which is why it is almost impossible to keep up with knowing about all of the cool apps that are out there that you can use via your smart phone to help keep you organized and also keep track of your calendar (and your kids!).

I’ve told you before about ThisLife, which isn’t really an application for your smart phone but it does function like one. I thought it would be a great time for me to introduce you to some other cool apps that will not only keep you organized, but will also save you time and your sanity.

Glympse

Glympse is a mobile app that allows parents to follow their children’s real-time movements for a set period of time. No longer will you have to constantly be asking your kids “where are you?!” because you will already know!

Once you download the app to your smartphone, you can choose people from your contact list to decide who can view your location, when they can view it, and for how long they can view it. You can also send an email or text message or share with Twitter and Facebook friends that you want to share “glympses” with.

Glympse users can simply send a one-time “Glympse” or set a timer to specify how long they want their ongoing location to be visible, for up to four hours. So if your kids are out and about, you can require them to set the timer so that you can keep track of their movements. It doesn’t require any special software – you only need web access to view the sender’s ongoing location.

Check out this short video to learn more about it. You can purchase the app for your particular smartphone through the Glympse website or through your phone (where you buy your apps). Did I mention it’s free?

Springpad

Springpad is a digital note-taking app that helps keep you organized and keep track of your children’s homework assignments, after-school activities and more. The app allows you to create separate notebooks and save to-dos, set reminders and save things while you are on your computer or even while you are on the go.

Schmoop

This study app is a unique way to prep for classes as an alternative to the widely-used Sparknotes. It’s an online study guide and resource for literature that provides summaries, analysis, quotes, themes, and follow up questions for lots of popular works.

Dropbox

This widely-popular file storage app can help you keep school papers safe on the cloud and ready to grab and download from anywhere.

iReward Chart

Need to keep track of your child’s to-dos and chores? How about an app that’s an online chore chart! You can keep track of all of your kids’ after-school duties and rewards via your phone. What could be easier?

Do you use apps on your cell phone? Which are your favorites?

Really, an app to track your children, isn’t that a bit much. Is there no trust involved at all in this society. I think that is really sad and reinforces all the negative press out there. Our parents never had such a thing and yes, I turned out fine and so did all my friends and remember, crime against children is down over the last 20 years. Here is a great website, http://www.freerangekids.wordpress.com.

I have never heard of any of these! And, I do tend to try to be more “free range” but admit that I do like to keep track of where my young children are (my oldest is 10) so I like the option. (And it sometimes HELPS me be more freerange!)

I have the ireward chart app and when I use it I love it. I get ;pretty forgetful but really need to start it up again. These other apps are great ideas as well. I love that there is always an app for everything!!

My husband and I use both Dropbox and Glympse. He’ll often send me a Glympse alert when he’s leaving work so I don’t have to call and say, “Where are you?” or “How’s traffic?” because I can see his little dot hurtling down the highway at a fast or slow speed. :)

Our kids aren’t old enough for their own phones yet but Glympse is a nice app to have when needed.

FYI it can be a real drain on your phone’s battery to use live; so don’t think you can track someone on it for long periods. Plus, they have to send you the email that invites you to follow their progress for a limited time. It’s not like you’ve just micro-chipped your kid.

Although, that idea does sound appealling!
